Verizon/Motorola/Google's Droid came out on 11/6/09 to compete with the iPhone (better network than AT&T). I was there at 7:30 AM to be the first to have it at my local store. I'd be at the Odeum on 11/7/09 if you want to see it. First impressions:

Best phone Verizon has ever had, great features, awesome screen (better than the iPhone), BUT not as easy as the iPhone to master. I'll add more in the near future.

Edit: see below for the update

I picked one up about the same time you did. I'm now busy reading the handbook and checking everything. It will take a little time to master, but it's a fantastic piece of equipment.

handbook? what handbook? ;) make sure you download/sign up with Google Voice. This way your Visual Voice mail is free and it is transcribed for you in your mailbox. Really cool feature.

Matty, the Droid comes with Android 2.0. It's the upgraded version of the Android 1.6. It will be out soon for all other Google phones. Check with your carrier to see when it would be out for upgrade. It's a lot faster and works a lot better than the 1.6. I heard it will be out in the first quarter of 2010 for general use.

To each his own. The iPhone has a lot of cool features and was the first to successfully produce a device that they controlled and was actually usable in the long term. Most other combo phones get tiresome after a while.

The Google Droid has enormous potential and I said this when the previews of the G1 came out: Google has a monstrous team of developers on this and this will -eventually- be a complete tie-in to everything Google. Also the Droid features predominantly in the Google's vision of a new GOS (Google OS) where all devices run a minimal OS to hook to Google for everything. I know, long-range vision but if someone can pull this off, it's Google!

No no no. After using the Droid for few days, I have a final Verdict. The Droid is everything the iPhone is but better. The iPhone is so controlled by Apple it's not even funny. This Droid thing will eventually take over. I am sure of it. Google Voice, 100% customizable, all Google's power and services behind it, better connectivity, better camera, better interface (yes you heard it right), physical keyboard, open source and Linux community supporting it, better screen, 10,000 useful applications (95% of Apple's apps are unused), Widgets widgets widgets, and faster more reliable network.

check out my speed test for the Droid on Verizon

Let me know what your results are. make sure you choose the 3G option. My last 6 tests: 910, 979, 1169, 1258, 1009, 1176, 1224 kbps.

My wife got so mad at me that I seemed more excited about the Droid's arrival than our first born. I THINK she was exaggerating a bit ;)

Bob, my large headed friend, you are correct. The Droid is the best smart phone I've ever had or seen. The browser is only slightly slower than my cable e-mail at home and several million times faster than the browser on my Blackberry Storm. The are an innumerable number of apps you can download for the Droid, including office. I read a report that stated that mobile devices would eventually supplant the computer. The Droid is a big step in that direction.

Be sure to get & use the car dock and desk dock. Car dock is great with google turn by turn navigation. That combined with voice recognition. Say "Navigate to Chicago Charitable Games" then drive!

    Widgets rock too!
