I am always in for a PLO cash game and I am sure there will be a few more players that will be interested in playing. Keep in mind that <1/3 of the players that come to the events post here.
I got the game going @ Tinley Park last Saturday so it'll likely happen again this Saturday too. Have had it going @ the Mexican Grill a few times too (a couple of BIG PLO games took place there).
Lol, just because you got lucky once Russ, it does not mean you got something on me. Even the broken watch is right twice a day. Come on down and show me what you got, boy!
I plan on being there this Saturday, for once, so I'm down for some PLO.
Darn, I am very doubtfull for tonight.... I will definitely be there tomorrow though and I am sure to get a table going :)
I always seem to be the one who tries to get this going. It would be nice for others to come down and ask for it too so that I don't get all the heat - all the time.
There are plenty of players that want to play PLO. Just keep asking for it and if we can get to the point where at least a list is going at every event then we can get this going more regularly.
I would like to emphasize two points here: the majoroty of PLO games are considered full ring with 6 players and short with 3. Very few games play 8 or 9-handed because then most all cards are out which makes the game very tight. The other point I would like to make is that even with 4 players, PLO still creates bigger pots than a 9-handed 1-2 NL game and it is always a max rake game.
Interesting point Andrew but I have to disagree. 6 handed PLO is still considered short handed imo and too dependent on the luck of the draw. It is a fun and loose game and at 1-2 quite affordable to win or lose a couple of hundred and have tons of fun. My choice is still a full table of at least 8 tough, one that you can play tighter and take advantage of the looser player.
Would love to see a 5-10 or higher Omaha eight at CCG. I even have 5 names for the game: Myself, Bert, Andrew, Ryan, and the Serb, heck Card Player Nick may even show up for this.
Hey, don't forget about me Bob. I love O8, especially with limit structure (But I play PL & NL as well). I should be at the event Saturday at some point in the day.
Regarding table numbers, I'm used to playing NLO & NLO8 with 6-8 people, of course, at the place I usually play, it gets very loose. We sometime play shorthanded at 2-4 people, while some are taking smoke breaks, but I really don't like that because there isn't as much action, and therefore a smaller chance of scooping a big pot.
Oh, and who's the Serb again? I'm half Serbian myself (hence some of the Nikola Tesla love). [I'm sure I'd recognize them if I saw them, I often forget names from CCG as I'm not as many events as I used to be because of work/friends.]
Depends where you play Bob. For many, many years PLO was being played strictly 6-handed. Reason is when you have 8 or 9 players (assuming they know what they are doing) most all cards are out which makes people much more tight. My personal favorite is 7 actually but I'll take anything down to 4-handed at CCG to get the game going.
Funny thing is, once the game does get going at CCG, people come out from all over the room to play it. The tough part is to get it going, then it rolls for hours on end.
The Serb is Dan at CCG. This is my opinion only: I love shortanded (5-6) Omaha on the Internet. It's a fun and loose game. Great way of killing some time. But to be profitable, in my opinion, you need a table of 8--9 and some tight aggresive play. I know Andrew loves to play many hands and I do too playing shorthanded Omaha, but don't be upset when your AAJ10 double suited loses to 26AK. :) This is even more essential in O8.
You know I'll play. We don't need to set a specific time. Just start a list at the beggining of the event and keep asking players that come into the cash games if they would be interested in a PLO/O8 game. Once you have 5-6, start the table and off it goes.
$5/$10 may deter a lot of people. How about $3/$6 with a Full Kill?
I'd play 3-6 but am not really interested in doing it every week. 5-10 is a small enough game for anyone to try it. With most pots chopped, the game should be close to a 1-2 or a small 2-5 no limit holdem.
U are NOT interested in doing 3/6 or 5/10 O8 every week??
Was that a joke or are you drunk?
It was not a joke. I'm not interested at all in a 3-6 Omaha 8. I will play it if nothing else is going on but 3-6 is too little. As Bert puts it, too many white chips ;). I will play 5-10 as I am playing it now. I said it is low enough for anyone to try it and make it into a nice regular game at CCG. My personal preference would be 10-20.
Books
PLO (Omaha hi) : anything by Jeff Hwang is great, start with the first one
Omaha 8: practice is the most important thing but the chapter in Doyle Brunson's second book (Super System II) that is written by Bobby Baldwin is the ultimate in my opinion.
I also think that we are worrying too much about new players for Omaha. These games, as I have found out in the last 8 weeks, are not supported by new players. New players come and go. The games are supported by regulars and these regulars would only play certain stakes.
For example, we would never get any of the Hollywood casino's Omaha 8 players (15-30) in CCG to play a 3-6 or even 5-10. If we had a 10-20 game going every Friday afternoon, I'd bet you that we would get some of them to show up and play all night not to mention Majestic's players. I'd even advertise for it. But it's hard to start a game that big. The Venetian has had a 4-8 Omaha 8 for a long time but to get a 8-16 game going, they had to do a lot of promotions ($2 rake and food vouchers). Now I think the game is regularly played there.
In my opinion, to get "regular" players to show up and play Omaha (eight or better or PLO) you have to raise the stakes and have a set time and day. 2-5 PLO and 10-20 Omaha 8 would be great to attract Horshoe's PLO players and Hollywood's O8 players. But I think that would be difficult at charitable games. I know Bert would love to have a regular 10-20 Omaha 8 at CCG.
Well I can almost guarantee that there will be a PLO game Friday in Elmhurst, its a good location for a lot of people and we have had a solid PLO every time at this venue. I'm open to any ideas/promotions to start off a 5/10 O8 game and hopefully build from there to some larger games that will draw players that might not come otherwise.
Omaha 8 is my game of choice these days. Will play PLO occasionally but I think I'm addicted to Omaha 8. The problem with getting an Omaha 8 going at CCG is that most people do not know the game. By that I mean they know how they play it and how the game goes but they don't know how much fun and how much action it entails. Most people think that since most of the pots are chopped between the hi hand and the low and the game is a structured game (limit) you can't make any money in it. They are mistaken. Due to numerous card combinations in Omaha and the ability to win both with the hi hand and the low hand, you get a lot more action in Omaha 8 (AKA Omaha hi-low).
At 5-10 limits, you routinely see an average of 6 people see the turn which makes the pot $60 (30 preflop and 30 on the flop). Another 4 will see the river for the big bet ($40) and another 3 will go to showdown ($30) to make the pot $130. Of course this amount increases if there are raises (which usually there are) and subsequent calls. $200 pots are quite common in a 5-10 game. You don't see $130 pots that often in a 1-2 no limit holdem game, do you? And this happens in most of the pots played during the night. As the limits go higher (15-30), the number of people seeing flops or going all the way to the end decreases. But you may still get up to 6 people seeing the flop and 4 going to showdown in loose games which makes it a very juicy game.
I don't know any action junkie that has played this game and not like it. Anyone who loves poker should try this. I guarantee they'd like it.
If you guys get it going at some point on Saturday that would be great. For O8, I would play up to 5-10. 4-8 might be a good compromise though, if some people think 5-10 is too high. 10-20 is too high for my bankroll though. 5-10 is perfect for it though.
For starters I'll be @ Elmhurst later today. So, start a list :)
I'll happily play 5/10 O8 Bob. I was just saying that we may not that many people. Would LOVE to play 5/10 PLO but I know full well this would be close to impossible to start in a charity setting.
Do you play Omaha? Make sure to make your way to Elmhurst today!
Unfortunately I'll be off tomorrow, Saturday boys.
Got the PLO going at Elmhurst around 4pm and table stayed strong till the end of the night. About 14 players in total came over making up for a great game.
At least 5 players confirmed that we will try to get the PLO going again this Sunday @ Joliet between 3:30-4:00pm!!
During the game I had an idea: instead of forum messages and such, I am collecting email addys from interested players. I will be sending out emails to discuss when we can have a game. This way we will know in advance when enough people will be coming to a specific event and have the PLO table ready to go.
I have 8 people on the list already! If you want to be included please 'whisper' your email to me and I'll add you to the list.
I will also look into setting up a Text Message list for sending out notifications. Will let you all know when I get this going - for now it's just email.
See y'all on Sunday!
Reminder:
game on ~ 3:30pm today at Joliet. We have 5 players confirmed, come join us!
As scheduled, game got going around 3:30pm today and run till closing.
Started full ring and played full ring for hours. Great game, some awesome pots. I think that the email list works wonders for this so we are going to keep going.
If interested in playing PLO send me your email and I'll add you to the list. We'll make this game a regular no matter what!
Looks like we have at least 7 people confirmed for PLO this Friday @ the Odeum.
Most people have day jobs so looks like the table should be going by 6pm right after the $220 is done :) Come down and have some fun with us!
Seems like we have plenty of interest from the forum as well as my list for a PLO - possible FLO8 mix too- for this Saturday with a start time of around 4-4:30pm.
Looks like 3-4 people are confirmed for PLO tonight, Friday so if you want to play PLO, come on down!
Penny games are for home games & let's-waste-some-time-with-online-poker Russ. If you want to play with grown ups, come join us.
Got the game going today @ Oak Lawn. Unfortunately it only run for ~ 3.5 hours as a few people got stacked and a couple others had to leave. Good thing is, some of these players said they'll be coming today Saturday at Tinley Park.
So it does look like we'll have a prety good game tomorrow @ Tinley! Come join us for one of the most addictive forms of poker around :)
As always with Omaha, there can be some insane rivers. I was on the wrong side of them 2 Saturdays in a row but at least the other days helped offset the situation a lot!
Yep, it's the nature of the game, but I've had a lot of them in live Omaha games lately, combined with an inability to make my draws as well. Variance can be a bitch.
Here's the plan for this coming weekend:
- Friday - Game around 6:30pm
- Saturday - We'll try to start the game around 2:30pm to try to 'fade' the Deepstack. If it gets broken up for the Deepstack we can get it started back again a couple of hours later when people start getting knocked out.
- Sunday - This is an excellent location for PLO as interest has always been strong. Expect to get the game going as early as 2-2:30pm and run strong till the end of the night!
Come join us!
Although it is Omaha, a lot of the Holdem principles still apply. As such, your straigt-flush draw is always -statistically- ahead at the flop UNLESS you are up against a set.
For Omaha odds, check Cardplayer's Omaha calculator. At the flop, you are 57.80% Not massive but then this is Omaha. 60-40 is a massive lead in Omaha so this almost as close as you can get post flop.
Ed can you just agree that you are not a fan of omaha and then leave the omaha players alone. I know you are quite the grumpy old man sterotype, but seriously you need to relax with all the complaints. Who is going to want to play cards with you?
Yet another night of Omaha. Some sick bad beats which are always part of the game too.
We resume Saturday @ Elmhurst. Will try to get the game going around 2:30pm in an effort to 'fade' the tourney. The hosting charity even said they will lower the rake for 2 hours around the tourney starting time to keep the game going!!! Come on down...
